About Vietnam Cashew Nuts

Presently, the Vietnam Cashew Industry is recognized as the uncontested leader in cashew nut exports, surpassing numerous Southeast Asian nations. It has consistently held the position of the foremost producer and exporter of cashew nuts for the past 17 years. The Southern region of Dak Lak and Binh Phuoc stands out as one of the most prolific areas for cashew nut production. In this region, farmers cultivate cashew nut trees of South American origin.

Harvesting

Typically, the cashew harvest season in Vietnam commences early, typically around the end of January or February, and concludes in May or June, contingent upon weather conditions and cultivation methods. Cashew trees yield an oval-shaped fruit known as the cashew apple, housing a single nut externally. Vietnam cashew nuts are collected during the ripening stage of both the pseudo-fruits and kernels.

Harvesting can occur while the fruits are still on the tree or after they have fallen to the ground. Following the harvest, the pulp is extracted, and the kernel is washed with water, subsequently sun-dried for 2-3 days, undergoes preliminary sorting, is packed, and stored in a dry and cool environment.

Production

Since 2017, Vietnam has emerged as the global epicenter for cashew nuts processing and stands as the leading exporter of cashew nut kernels worldwide, contributing to over 50% of the world’s processed raw cashews. Binh Phuoc province, recognized as the largest region for high-quality cashew cultivation in Vietnam, plays a pivotal role in this success.

Annually, Vietnam exports approximately 400,000 to 550,000 tons of cashew nut kernels. Despite this significant volume, the country has the capacity to produce around 1,200,000 tons of cashew nut kernels per year. In 2018, the Vietnam cashew nuts industry achieved a production milestone of approximately 2,660,000 tons, including the shells, surpassing India by 3.4 times. By 2020, Vietnam solidified its position as an indisputable leader in cashew nuts production and export, with an export volume of 515,000 tons.

Vietnam’s primary cashew nut products are Whole White Cashews, with the industry comprising 80% whole kernels and 20% broken kernels. The prevalence of whole cashew grades in Vietnam is attributed to hand-shelling, a labor-intensive process done manually.

The W320 cashew nut kernel stands as the flagship product of the Vietnam cashew industry. It is estimated that approximately 60% of cashew nuts are consumed as snacks, often roasted and salted. The remaining 40% finds application in confectionery and bakery products, serving as a substitute for peanuts and almonds. Vietnam’s W320 Cashews grades are highly sought after, making them the most popular among cashew kernels and readily available from reputable Vietnam cashew nut companies.

Export Markets

Vietnam stands as the foremost exporter of cashew nuts globally, maintaining its dominant presence in the US, Europe, and various other regions. Vietnamese cashew nut exports continue to secure a leading position on the world stage, accounting for 50% of the processed raw cashew capacity and over 60% of global cashew nut exports. The export destinations for Vietnamese cashew nuts are remarkably diverse, encompassing countries such as Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Switzerland, the USA, Australia, South Africa, the UAE, India, Singapore, Japan, and many others.

The Grade Of Cashews Vietnam

In Vietnam, cashew nut grades typically adhere to the AFI Standard. Cashew kernels undergo grading, categorizing them into white/scorched wholes, splits, butts, and more, based on factors such as size, shape, and kernel color. While there are numerous grades of cashew kernels, only a select few are commonly available and traded in commercial markets.
