Within five years, promising results were observed in terms of its growth, development, and economic potential. Vietnam is considered to have suitable land and climate conditions for macadamia cultivation. Currently, 29 provinces in Vietnam are cultivating macadamia, with a total area of approximately 20,000 hectares. The cultivation is mainly concentrated in two regions: the Northwest and the Central Highlands. The annual production is estimated at 9,000 tons of fresh macadamia nuts.

The global demand for macadamia nuts is projected to increase in the coming years. Vietnamese macadamia nuts have the potential to be exported to major markets such as Japan, South Korea, China, and European countries.

Macadamia industry in Vietnam

Vietnamese macadamia industry introduction

Macadamia is a plant that was introduced domestically to Vietnam in 1990, belonging to the group of non-timber forest products in the list of main plantation tree species. There are 28 provinces in Vietnam growing macadamia, with a total area of 18,840 hectares, mainly concentrated in the Northwest and Central Highlands regions; the harvesting area is 6,853 hectares, and the estimated production in 2021 is 8,514 tons of fresh nuts per year.

Vietnamese maccadamia export markets:

The main market for macadamia products is domestic and some countries and territories such as Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan (China).

Main types of maccadimia for exporting

It can be said that the development of macadamia in our country in recent years has achieved positive results, with rapid growth in both area and production. However, due to the spontaneous development of macadamia in some places, planting based on trends and not following proper technical procedures, planting in locations with unsuitable climate and soil conditions, using seeds of unknown origin and source, planting non-genuine seeds, many areas have poor growth, low fruit yield, or no fruit at all.

Harvesting

On the other hand, the process of macadamia is still simple. The products are not refined, and the quality is not high; the market for macadamia products has not been expanded; there is a lack of consistency in mechanisms and policies to encourage and attract the participation of people and businesses to invest in the development of macadamia.

As of May 2021, the macadamia area in the Central Highlands region is 9,870 hectares, of which 1,690 hectares are pure macadamia and 8,180 hectares are intercropped, accounting for 52.4% of the current macadamia area nationwide. The macadamia area in the Central Highlands is mainly intercropped with other industrial and agricultural crops such as coffee, tea, and black pepper.

The macadamia cultivation area currently under harvest is 5,228 hectares (accounting for 53% of the total area), with 215 hectares dedicated to stable productivity.

The average yield for trees aged 10 and above is 4.0 tons of fresh nuts per hectare for pure cultivation and 2.8 tons of fresh nuts per hectare for intercropping with other crops. Regarding the production in 2021, the Central Highlands region is estimated to reach 6,522 tons.

During the period from 2016 to 2020, Vietnam’s total import turnover of macadamia reached 136.8 million USD, with a volume of nearly 5,400 tons of shelled nuts and 25,500 tons of unshelled nuts. The total export turnover of macadamia from Vietnam reached 59.6 million USD, with over 3,000 tons of kernels and 390 tons of unshelled nuts. Vietnamese macadamia has been exported to 21 countries/territories worldwide, including Thailand, Germany, Malaysia, Hong Kong (China), the Netherlands, and the United States.

The price of macadamia is forecasted to stabilize around 65,000 Vietnamese dong per kilogram by the year 2030, with an economic efficiency of approximately 195 million dong per hectare per year (for pure cultivation) and about 97 million dong per hectare per year (for intercropping). The total estimated output is 45,000 tons of nuts. With a stable selling price for finished products in the international market at around 200 million dong per ton of nuts, the revenue is equivalent to approximately 4,000 billion dong.
